Why Should I Pay a Full-Time Missionary to Stay at Home, Instead of Going to the Foreign Field?

This is one of the most common questions I hear related to supporting US missions. Many within the church imagine that local congregation’s are enough to reach our cities with the gospel. In reality, this is far from true.

Christianity Today called the city of Dallas Fort Worth TX “the new capital of evangelicalism” as it boasts more churches per capita than any other city in our nation (May 21, 2002). Yet it is also considered to be one of the most under evangelized cities in the US as well.

Sadly, the trend isn’t better, but it is worse in other cities in America. Statistics now show that nationwide, the church is steadily deteriorating and losing ground in our culture. The Barna research group has gone on record as saying that 95% of Christians in America have never shared their faith while other polls show that within the next two decades the percentage of professing Christians in America will drop to 4%. What this means for us is that America could be lost to God and the things of the kingdom in a single generation. This news should alarm us.

So what’s the answer? Put more pressure on pastors to “do the work of an evangelist?” (2 Tim 4:5) Actually, this is a bit of a misnomer. The truth is pastors are some of the most overworked, under-paid professionals in the nation (I certainly never made off with a big buck). In reality, pastors are not normally equipped, either in gifting or calling, to do the work of evangelism. The challenge for us then is to square with the inconvenient truth that America is fast becoming a mission field. And when the combined efforts of the church throughout our nation are reaching less than a tithe of our cities, we need to revisit our game plan! We need to start training up some of our top evangelists and missionaries not to “go to the field” but to stay home!
